Bakshish

Formed in 1983 in Kluczbork, Poland, BAKSHISH are the founding fathers and mainstay of the reggae movement in Poland. Their three albums to date have been major hits at home, even though they have never worked with a major record label. In the 1980’s, with the massive infiltration of Jamaican and British reggae, Poland was celebrating more of a home grown scene, regarded as the golden era of Polish reggae, BAKSHISH were at the forefront of that movement.

Bakshish

In 1993 BAKSHISH released their first album One Love, already hugely successful as a live band, this was to transform their career. It became the biggest and most important album of its kind in Poland, mixing Roots Reggae, Spirituality and a ‘Sly and Robbie-esque’ Dub style. This furthered the band to perform to ever growing crowds, as well as opening the doorway into other markets in central Europe.

2002 saw a dramatic change in the band’s fortunes. The bands leader Jarex became seriously ill, needing surgery but not being able to meet the costs. It was at this point that Poland showed its love for Bakshish. Fans, other bands and charity organsations got together and raised the capital for this surgery. This act enabled the continuing existence of BAKSHISH.

The band is now a much bigger entity, containing many more musicians than the original band, many of whom play with Poland’s best known reggae and raggamuffin bands. They have just undertaken a new departure in their existence, feeling that with the dispersal of Polish youth across Europe that now is the time to expand and play in other countries. The floating reggae rhythms of Bakshish make this a viable option, as the message is contained not only in lyrics but in the music also. The vibrancy of the performance leave an indelible impression with every reggae fan who come to see the band. Don’t dare miss this show.

Ghetto Priest

Once a football hooligan with army background, then mugger & a prisoner. At some point he decided to change his life for better one & he became a true rasta. GHETTO PRIEST (priest from ghetto) is recently known as a memeber of a family-collective ON-U SOUND. Firstly he was a long-term member of AFRICAN HEAD CHARGE, then MC-ing for ADRIAN SHERWOOD sound system (some of you may remember him from polish tour in 2003).

Ghetto Priest

Regarded as a fantastic vocalist, GHETTO PRIEST was invited by ASIAN DUB FOUNDATION to record vocals for an opening track from Enemy of the Enemy album. In 2003 On-U Sound released his debut album Vulture Culture. GHETTO PRIEST is now a leading vocalist in ASIAN DUB FOUNDATION. His September performance in Mass coincides with release of his second solo album & a promotional tour.

Ani’Razou

ANI’RAZOU was created by people who have been involved in the Polish reggae scene for a quite long time. Bands like Stage of Unity, Rasta Warrior, Amos, Orkiestra na Zdrowie, Badzmy Przyjaciolmi, Asunta, Sloma I Bebnoludy, Vibes&Power, Projekt Warszawa, Greens & Ras Pablo - those are the most important projects that the present members of ANI’RAZOU were involved in. Their music style is basicly reggae with lots of different influences, the band themselves describe their sound as Rock’a'Vibe.

Ani Razou

It was a long time ago that we played in Poland and now have moved to UK. The last gig we played was in winter 2005 with unoficial Brygada K, it was heavy.

Now is the time for Mass In heart of Brixton, warming up for Bakshish. In a memorable times in Poland we played with them in Opole, the feeling there was very warm, green & space cake-like;) On 15th Sept, on another vibe’y get-togheter we’re going to generate the biggest positive energy ray that south London have never expierienced before.

Are you gonna be there? We’re gonna be there. Bless.

Jah Wise, MC Mykkal Star

JAH WISE is an English DJ with his own sound system, known form frequent appearances in London’s Southall Community Centre (Jah Observer Sound System). He will be accompanied by MC MYKKAL STAR.

Jah Wise

Ok - this is a brief of me and sound systems. I grew up listening to reggae music from quite early age as my father had a record collection and everytime he went to Jamaica he would bring new records back to the UK. My older borther was into reggae too and he was a DJ for a sound system called WASP. He later become a lead vocalist for MISTY IN ROOTS.

My brother in law, his brothers and I started to think about building a sound in 1978. I went to Jamaica in 1979 and was blown away by the sounds over there. I listened to sounds like Jah Love, Stur Gav, Ray Sybolic, Gemini, Black Harmony.

I came back from Jamaica and played the session tapes that I recorded there to my friends. We decided that we would build a sound called URBAN ROCKERS. Chris Bolton, the engineer of Misty in Roots lent me some equipment for our sound. We played through the 80s at local venues, parties, carnival and supported Misty in Roots on a few occasions. We stopped playing the sound around the early 90s but I continued to collect records and DJ under the name of RIDDIMMACKA. I clashed with Ras Digby and others down at the Chopper in Battersea, supported Mikey on APS Sound and would DJ for various sounds at Southall community centre.

To date I have played numerous times at Southall Community Centre with Black Liberation, Trenchtown and others, done a number of tribute sessions to BARRY BROWN and Junior Delgrado. These were billed as Urban Rockers v Trenchtown with me as JAH WISE and using the APS Sound System. Last year i decided to rebuild the sound and played with my own sound system for a tribute to King Tubby on Saturday 10th June 2006.

Urban Rockers in back on the road again!
